What is Structural Integration?

Ida Rolf, founder, on "Rolfing"
"Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as constant fatigue, yet others as an unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age. And yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that is has been ignored: they are off balance, they are at war with gravity."
"Rolfers make a life study of relating bodies and their fields to the earth and its gravity field, and we so organize the body that the gravity field can reinforce the body's energy field. This is our primary concept."
Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

Daniel on "Rolf Structural Integration"
"Rolfing" and "Structural Integration" are two different names for the same practice. I actually prefer the term, "Rolf Structural Integration".
Rolf Structural integration is an original, scientifically validated system of body restructuring and movement education; that is the technical definition. My experience has taught me that it is something different for every person I have the opportunity to work with.
Before and After
Yes, it does systematically relieve patterns of stress and impaired function. The primary focus is to facilitate the relationship between gravity and the human body.
It is a perfect compliment to chiropractics, physical therapy and yoga, in that assists the body in achieving alignment, increased mobility, balance and reduced pain.
In my practice, I begin by examining you to see what patterns you show in your stance and tissues. I look for things that aren't level and areas that are twisted, constricted or compressed. I have you tell me where you have been tight or have had pain or injury .
I ask you for movement or breathing to see what moves and what doesn't. When we begin the 10-series I then know what I am trying to achieve with you and I work with you to achieve it by applying pressure to the fascial tissue, allowing the tissues to release from each other and open up.
I address your particular problem areas as we progress; giving you more length, fluidity, freedom and ease of movement in those areas as well as throughout your whole body.
